Waking up each day to announcements of how people's lives have been changed overnight by the stroke of a pen is beginning to affect my mental health. I can't even begin to imagine what it is doing to the people whose lives have been changed.
Frankly I don't know the immigration status of anyone in my life. Do you? I DO know that many of the people who grow our food and provide home health care are undocumented and will be swept up in this attempt to nab the few who are "illegal alien criminals." And I know those people's kids are American citizens because they were born here. And those kids are scared that family members could get rounded up. We should never put kids through that. It's inhumane.
all valid points for sure. i've worked with people with undocumented status. but we're not talking about those people here. we are talking about illegal alien criminals. and there are about a million that have been adjudicated and have valid deportation notices. is it ok to deport them?
A million criminals in the undocumented population? Felonies or misdemeanors too?Can you share a cite that I can look at to better understand that claim?
But numbers aside, on the merits, yes I can see utility in reporting an undocumented person who has been found guilty of a felony.
My concerns are with the collateral damage - the children of those people if only parent; those rounded up in a raid who aren't criminals, (like a US Veteran, which recently happened) and the severe bias around who is targeted and who is not. There are undocumented Europeans here too. Are they all law abiding? Statistics suggest no. Are we going after them? No. Why the selective enforcement?
great questions Julie, and I appreciate the thoughtful approach.
felony or misdemeanor does not matter - illegally crossing the border is by statute a crime - Trump did not sign that law but it is being enforced publicly.
family concerns - im jaded, i broke the law and went to prison. not once did anyone ask me about my children. why are the children of illegal criminals any different than American criminals children?
if one is worried about collateral damage, maybe arresting them in the jail before the sanctuary city/state releases them?
there are 30k+ chinese men 18-35 that have been released, along with iranians, tajikistans, turks, and a ton of others - a recipe for terrorist disaster it seems.
Take a pic of the cards and keep on your phone!
Good point! Will edit to include!
Every day brings more frightening announcements. So demoralizing. DO NOT admit them to any workplace or home without a legal warrant.
Amen Rachel.
I teared up at your offer for a hug . Thank you.
