"Valid reason for the rule" presumably refers to your recent post about the FPPC investigation. And one can readily imagine a case where "honoraria" are used to influence a public official. I don't for a moment think this is your case, and agree that its application here is completely unfair, but even for something with as little financial responsibility as Palo Alto City Council, there is still the possibility of influence over how millions are spent. Perhaps the rule should be reformulated to specify a share ceiling from a single source (or one other refinement), but I'm sure the drafter thought they were fighting the good fight by casting a broad net.

My point: Gexxy's comment was unnecessarily harsh, but not ipso facto wrong.

Yep totally agree with you, Wayne. A difference of opinion about the FPPC regulation is legit. But she didn't need to bring my weight into her critique.

Weight is one of the characteristics people still think it's okay to make fun of. I'm no Trump fan, but when people started making fun of his girth I thought to myself "there are so many legitimate things to critique about this man - why do we have to make it about his body type?"

Like you, I will nearly always engage in a good faith discussion with someone who disagrees. But name calling, ad hominem attacks, trolling from sketchy accounts and sh*t-stirrers...instant block. Who has time for that? I know some people mute on Twitter, but then I'm still providing a platform for ugliness and exposing my followers to it. I'm good with blocking.

Today I wrote about a similar topic -- how the internet magnifies our mistakes, and makes compassion, grace, and humanity difficult. I guess there's something in the air. (Besides you, working!)

"Hurt people hurt people" is a phrase I use often, in my work in child advocacy and in life. Your post is a good reminder. It also works with trolls -- online and in person. Thank you

Hi Rachel, thanks for chiming in. there's a lot we have in common as humans and i try to find the universality - and humanity - in even the worst of us.
