Hey there 👋🏽
I’m Julie Lythcott-Haims. I love humans. And I love examining gooey human interactions, like a conversation I just had with my grown daughter, or my Lyft driver, or the guy at the grocery store.
To cut to the chase…
I really hope you’ll join the eleven thousand other humans in Julie’s Pod, my online community. And you can subscribe by clicking this button:
The One Word Readers Use to Describe Julie’s Pod…
The Longer Explanation…
I’m a writer. A New York Times bestselling author of non-fiction books, including How to Raise an Adult, Real American: A Memoir, and Your Turn: How to Be an Adult. I give presentations on my books around the U.S. and around the world. Maybe you’ve seen me?
I write non-fiction because I think that trying to get at the truth of what we experience with one another is far more fascinating than fiction. And I know from personal experience that it’s really helpful to hear others’ stories so that we can feel more ‘normal,’ more connected, and less alone.
Julie’s Pod is where I bring you a regular dose of my truth, warts and all, by showing you something I saw or did recently, how it felt, what I regretted, what I loved, and what I learned. I write stories like this about my life to help you know that you’re not alone in trying to make sense of your life and the world around you.

You Can Subscribe!
Julie’s Pod offers both a free and paid tier. The free subscription gets you a few newsletters each month where I poke and prod at the experiences I’m having and serve them up to you so you can examine whether they’re true for you, too.
The paid tier ($5/month or the discounted rate of $50/annually) gets you the newsletter, plus opportunities to go deeper with me:
Live Zoom hangouts on personal development, including:
how to be a better listener
parenting an adult child
overcoming helicopter parenting
accepting and embracing your identity when the world wants to “other” you
being a caregiver
dealing with grief
Sneak peek of my next parenting book and the opportunity to help shape it
And last but not least, free “Julie’s Pod” stickers for your laptop, water bottle, and phone.
Please note, I work on a sliding scale philosophy, so if you are unable to afford the paid tier please email me (me@lythcott-haims.com) and ask to be comped.
A Lot More About Me…
I’m in my late-fifties. I’m black, biracial, queer, bisexual, and oh so imperfectly human. I hope to learn and grow until I draw my last breath, which means I’m okay with screwing up now and then because I’m going to learn from those mistakes. Right now what I’m working on hardest is trying to extend grace to others and myself as much as possible instead of expecting everyone to be perfect all the damn time (myself included).
I’m a mom to two wonderful twentysomethinngs, Sawyer and Avery. My partner Dan and I have been together since he was 19 and I was 20, and this past summer we celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary. Our son still lives with us, as did my amazing octogenarian mother until quite recently when she passed away at 86.
My academic credentials include an undergraduate degree in American Studies from Stanford, a law degree from Harvard, a Masters of Fine Arts in Writing from California College of the Arts, and an honorary Doctor of Letters from University of Puget Sound. But those brand names don’t define me.
My first career was corporate law where I practiced intellectual property litigation in Silicon Valley. I then became a senior administrator at Stanford, where I was known for driving visionary change through collaboration and cooperation, and where in 2010 I earned one of the university’s highest awards for outstanding service to undergraduate education as the university’s Dean of Freshmen and Undergraduate Advising.
After fourteen years at Stanford, I pivoted toward writing full-time. My career as an author (How to Raise an Adult, Real American: A Memoir, and Your Turn: How to Be an Adult. How to Raise an Adult) led to becoming a New York Times bestseller. It also led to a TED Talk which has been viewed millions of times, and put me in high demand for talks and workshops around the U.S. and around the world. You can learn more at my website.
I’ve served on over a dozen nonprofit boards and advisory boards locally, regionally, and nationally. I am currently an elected member of the City Council in Palo Alto, California, which is the very heart of Silicon Valley where I am trying to help our city become more inclusive and more welcoming for all.
Back to You…
I write Julie’s Pod for people like you. I hope you’ll join me and thousands of other awesome humans who make up the Julie’s Pod community.
