Should I Brush My Teeth or Run for Congress?

Maybe Both?

Seven days ago, I made the decision to run for U.S. Congress here in the 16th Congressional District in California (Silicon Valley).

In seven days, we’ve pulled together a first rate team of people to: raise money, build a website, design a logo, develop policy positions, raise money, craft a press release, raise money, take pictures, write copy, prep me for media, and raise money. Do you see the theme here?

Each night I went to bed after midnight, and when I inevitably got up to pee at like three a.m. my brain thought it was time to turn itself on again, so I’d be thinking about the campaign as I tried to will myself back to sleep. This is not the time for that. This is the time for sleep. But my brain failed to believe me.

I was supposed to write this for you last night. But I tried and failed to figure out how to say it, and I tried and failed again, and by 2am I was totally fried. So here I am this morning with a video from my bathroom.

I trust I will get better at this. I know I will make mistakes. But I also know that for the sake of my Sawyer and Avery, and for YOUR kids, and for all of our kids, we can and MUST solve the systemic problems we face. I want to be able to look my kids in the eye and say: “We’re doing all we can on housing, the climate, income inequality, gun violence, loneliness, reproductive rights, and combatting all the hate. We want you to have all the things you need to thrive my child. We owe you that. And it can no longer wait.”

Speaking of messages from parents to children, here I am with Daddy when I was about two. He called me “Old Sport” and believed there was nothing I couldn’t do. Here I am with my babies earlier this year. Parent to child to child to child to child. That’s why we’re here.

So join me, will you please, because yes in case you’re wondering, this is real. I’m running for Congress. And did I mention we need to raise money?
